even after reinstalling ejabberd, no error log in /var/log/ejabberd

I have tried reinstalling via both apt-get and aptitude, both ways install with no errors, but one warning:

"adduser: Warning: The home directory `/var/lib/ejabberd' does not belong to the user you are currently creating"

It then goes to start the jabber server, and it fails. The only file in the /var/log/ejabberd directory is the erl_crash.dump file.
