ejabberd and /etc/passwd

Hello experts,
Need help.

Is there any way to configure ejabberd to authenticate using /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow?

We do not want to maintain separate list of users and would like to utilize the userid already created on unix.

Any suggestions? Can we do this using external script? If so, please someone script/steps.
