I recently upgrade my XMPP server Debian (stable) from 7 to 8 and some useful commands appear to dropped off ejabberdctl, namely adding a nickname for a user.
The version I was using on Debian 7 was 2.1.10-4+deb7u1
The version on Debian 8 is 14.07-4
Is there another way to add a users nickname?

I do not know about Debian
I do not know about Debian ejabberd packaging, but it is possible that they remove mod_admin_extra.
You should install it by yourself or use ejabberd 15.04, which now has mod_admin_extra module included as default.
