Should it be possible (wise) to connect nodes running versions 0.9.8 and 1.0.0 respectively in a cluster?

Mixing different versions of ejabberd nodes
I think the database
I think the database structure has not changed from 0.9.8 to 1.0.0. Since ejabberd nodes communicate indirectly using the Mnesia database, i guess it should work.
